A few friends and I volunteered to help clean up the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in Staten Island today.
Never before have I seen so much chaos and demolition caused by Mother nature first hand. I've only seen it on TV and movies. I had to refrain from tearing up at the sight of all the debris and houses that used to be.
While cleaning up one of the affected back yards, I noticed a trash bag and was about to haul it out to the trash truck when the owner told me to leave it: It was the body of his dog who drowned. I almost burst out crying.
He noticed and said to me plainly: "I've no more tears to cry."
